Cyber Attacks: 3 Ways to Prevent & Mitigate Them

In the recent times, there are many cyber attacks reported on many big firms.

Most or all of those firms have a threat intelligence team to work and mitigate the threats.

But, for most of the small businesses and start-ups, the security seems like a painful task as it requires resources and technical knowledge.

In this post, I would cover some methodologies to prevent or reduce the losses due to cyber attacks.
    So, let’s get started

    1. Backend Protection

Your company would have been using a backend for the tasks done on front end. The security of backend is very crucial as it might link various other resources available on a web server.

You could protect the backend of your server or application (like WordPress) by:

    A. Using the strong passwords and avoiding the common passwords like {administrator, admin, admin123, etc). Use a password manager to keep the password handy when needed.

    B. Using 2 factor authentication on your back-end. 2 factor authentication helps prevent the cyber attacks which targets login vulnerability or using the brute force attacks.

    C. Protecting the APIs used in the application. This is a technical task and can require a professional to implement.

If you are a WordPress user, you can achieve these tasks by using a security plugin. API protection in WordPress could be related to updating the plugins and firewall for vulnerabilities detected in the plugins.

    2. Disaster Mitigation

Many small businesses and start-ups face the difficulty in reverting to the stage where they were after a cyber attack.
This is due to unavailability of backups of the resources of a company.

So You should take the backups of your data quite frequently as possible.
Many modern web hosting services provide the automatic backups of databases and web files to revert the losses due to a mishap.

Ask your hosting provider about the backups and it’s frequency.
If you have a website with less dynamic content, then the frequency of a day or week should be enough for you, but take a moment and decide it according to your business needs.

    3. Data Encryption

Many firms face a huge business loss due to the impact on their brand value. The data of your business is very crucial and it must be secured the right way.

Therefore, an e-commerce website which stores the credit card information, a SSL certificate is a top priority because without an SSL certificate because it is technically not allowed to have an e-commerce website process transactions.

Also, The information like passwords, credits card numbers, etc, must be encrypted using a 256 or 128 bit encryption key in the form of hashes.

This is an automatic process which is implemented on the server side script and MUST only be done by a professional server side programmer or a web developer.

The prevention of the cyber attacks and mitigating them could take a considerable amount of time and resources but the losses due to loop holes in the system could lead to much larger financial loss on your business.

Thus, Take some time and implement these tasks on your system. There are many other tasks for preventing cyber threats but the most important are covered in this post.
